In some instances, a layer of lava will cool down to form the characteristic pillar-like structure called columnar
jointing. As this cooling effect occurs after the eruption, columnar jointing does not help in the study of volcanoes
themselves. However, the jointing helps to control weathering and erosion, giving the well-known patterns of the
Giant’s Causeway and Fingal’s Cave.
This photograph shows part of the longest outcrop of columnar jointing in Iceland.
