Faulting

A fault is a fracture in the earth's crust along which there has been movement and displacement. The type of fault produced depends on the nature of the stress which caused the fracture: conversely, the nature of the stress can be determined from the type of fault:

  • normal
  • reverse
  • tear or transcurrent

Geopix Study Guide "Faulting"

  • gives full images of the examples shown below, and others, to illustrate the main types of faulting;
  • includes labelled photographs to identify the parts of a fault;
  • gives 'field exercises' on the interpretation of faults;
  • relates the style of faulting to stress patterns;
  • suggests how to answer exam questions on this topic;
  • includes an additional section with a few images relating to earthquakes.
