Silicate Minerals

When identifying minerals, a reference list of the properties of each mineral is needed - all 3000 of them! - so that a match may be made. Here, we will confine the list to the common minerals likely to be met in ‘everyday’ Geology in the field.

For more details of the other 2880 minerals, many books are available to help with the search.

Identification using a microscope identification is a different and complex subject - but very accurate - beyond the scope of these study guides.

For convenience here, the minerals are divided into three groupings:

  • the silicate minerals
  • the chemical minerals
  • the ore minerals

Geopix Study Guide 'Silicate Minerals' describes the properties, uses and occurrence of

  • quartz
  • feldspars
  • micas
  • amphiboles
  • pyroxenes
  • olivines
  • garnet

illustrated by photographs of typical specimens.
