Welcome to Geopix

GEOPIX brings you photographs of volcanoes, glaciers, folds, faults, igneous intrusions, landforms and other geological and geographical features from countries all around the world, including Britain.

Some of the photographs are shown as examples of the features which may be of general interest to students studying Geology and Geography, or to visitors and holidaymakers.

Most are arranged into Study Topics and Guides for students revising for Geology and Geography, particularly at AS/A2 level. Revision notes are illustrated by the photographs, accompanied by full explanations and exam guidance. Sets of similar Topics are collected into Study Guides which are available on CD-ROM and these may be purchased for individual educational use.

Geopix Exam Commentaries for A Level Geology look at recent exam papers, giving all the answers and the reasons behind the answers, illustrated by photographs and diagrams where appropriate. There are hints about exam technique and warnings against common pitfalls. The Commentaries are available for OCR and WJEC exams for Summer 2006, Winter 2007, Summer 2007.

The Geopix Dictionary of Geological Terms for A Level includes definitions of all the terms listed in the exam specifications - and many more - mostly written in the style of exam answers, and grouped into subject areas for easier revision. Many terms are illustrated by photographs and diagrams.

Volcanoes: Illustrated By Tenerife and Volcanoes: Illustrated By Iceland are guides to volcanoes, volcanic processes and products suitable for A Level study, but also for the interested holidaymaker. Both guides have the same content, but show different examples, photographs and suggestions for places to visit for the two different volcanic islands.

In Case Studies you will find a collection of classic examples of geological features, described in detail and fully illustrated. These examples are already included in other Study Guides but have been put together as a compilation for students who prefer these descriptions as a separate CD/download.

Mapwork for A Level Geology explains how to interpret geological maps used in AS and A2 exams. Worked examples – including some from past exams – show how to draw cross sections and compile a geological history of the area. The more advanced maps produced by the British Geological Survey are explained, and there is an introduction to strike lines (although these are not required for A Level). The guide is designed to cover the units of the WJEC specifications which cover mapwork (GL2 and GL4-E4) and is included in some of the WJEC compendium CDs, as listed in the online store. Alternatively, the guide may be purchased separately.

WJEC COURSE GUIDES are compiled specifically for the exam specifications, fully illustrated by photographs, diagrams, exam questions and, where helpful, glossaries.

  • WJEC: GL1 Foundation Geology builds up a broad picture of the subject of Geology.
  • WJEC: GL3 Geology and the Human Environment describes the geological hazards presented by nature and created by human activity.
  • WJEC: GL4 Interpreting the Fossil Record extends knowledge and understanding of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks and processes, rock deformation and the fossil record. (E1, E2 and E3 only)
Geological mapping for GL2 and GL4 is included in the "Mapwork for A Level Geology" course guide.
