Fossils
A fossil is the remains, representation or trace of an organism which is preserved in rocks. The term generally applies to remains which are older than 10,000 years, the end of the Ice Age. A fossil may be the actual organism, the original or altered shell/skeleton, tracks, trails, footprints, burrows and even droppings (coprolites).

While dinosaurs and other large vertebrates capture the imagination, the smaller invertebrates are generally more common and more useful for geological studies.

Fossils

Fossils provide evidence about evolution and the development of life and about the geography of the world in past eras, including the continental drift aspect of plate tectonics. They help to date the rocks in which they are found.
