Marine Deposition

Coastal Deposition

Material which is provided by marine erosion must be deposited somewhere. Indeed, many seaside towns encourage deposition and try to prevent sand and shingle from being carried away from their beaches.

Deposition provides
  • better beaches
  • protective barriers against further erosion
  • areas of new land to compensate for that lost to erosion
A town which encourages deposition along their part of the coast may sometimes starve the next town of their share of the sediment.

There are risks in trying to change nature's pattern of transport and deposition. Experience shows that we upset the delicate balance between the effects of erosion and deposition at our peril! We need to understand the processes of deposition just as much as those of erosion.

Geopix Study Guide 'Marine Deposition'
